On Monday, April 6, Italy was hit by an earthquake of a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter Scale. The epicenter was the city of L’Aquila in the Abruzzo region with a population of about 70,000. So far 40 dead have been reported.

Update: According to some newer sources there are at least 275 known deaths, 1,500 people injured, and many more made homeless, as reported by Civil Protection Chief Guido Bertolaso.
